A Month, Just for Me

This month I will turn 28 and I have been thinking a lot about life, the universe, getting older, being happy and getting healthy. As June approached, I started thinking about dedicating the month to myself. As a gift. Happy Birthday; here's a month.

It was a bare bones idea, which I fleshed out slowly as I went about my daily life.

What exactly does giving myself a month mean?

It means focusing on my CREATIVITY; joining in with the 30 Day Photography Challenge (thanks Chantelle of Fat Mum Slim for posting about this) - you can follow along with my daily photo on Instagram (username is byBecky) or my Instagrid. It means getting more involved with the craft the girls do. It means stopping the car to photograph the things I always see which I always want to stop for but never do.

CREATIVITY
It means remembering that each day is new and fresh, forgiving anything I considered to be a 'failure' the day before and moving on.  It means giving myself permission to take time out when things are too much.

It means taking the time to breathe

It means INDULGENCE. Without guilt.

INDULGENCE
It means taking the time to get organised and set up in the areas which I want to PURSUE, as well as general life. Concentrating on getting things off the ground and running smoothly.

PURSUE
It means concentrating on my health. Getting serious about becoming FIT. Making the time to exercise. Planning life in a way that means creating more balanced, healthy meals is easy and do-able. It means working on my MENTAL health, just as much as my physical. Focusing on positivity, what makes me happy and content while banishing the negative from my life.

It involves making NEW HABITS and breaking old ones.

NEW HABITS
Put simply, June is going to be a month for me to get things together, to look after me and make the right decisions for myself which can only mean good things for my family. It's about finding myself. It's about giving me what I need in order to give more of myself to those I love.

I think it's going to be the start of a beautiful friendship.

It's ALL About Me: Simply

BeckyandJames

A steaming cup of coffee, girls with Nanna picking up Uncle Caleb, Jazzy asleep, James at work, dinner bubbling. Simply a moment alone to sip, breath and regroup.

Even if it only lasted for a quarter of the cup.

It's ALL About Me: April

BeckyandJames

Welcome to the first new format of It's ALL About Me, it is now a monthly feature here on BeckyandJames.com and I hope that taking the pressure off will lead to this series being the motivational kick start I intended it to be. For me and for you.

As I said in my first post on this; (Me time is) something we really should all do for our mental, emotional, physical and most importantly family health. I need to remember that because when I don't make the effort to refresh myself I really feel it. And so does everyone around me. Like now.

When I decided to reformat these posts I went out and bought myself a cute little spiral notebook to journal, to think, to brainstorm and because I really like cute notebooks. I chose to focus on making a list of ideas of Me Time activities that I would like to do or try and in months to come I hope to work through them. Find the things that I enjoy, the things which refresh and renew me.

There are so many things that I have never done before. Things that are touted as relaxing. Manicures. Pedicures. Massages. I have put in my request (Acrylics) for mother's day or my birthday (a month after mother's day) but so far James seems to be conveniently deaf on the subject.

I hope to take a journey each month, to try new things and discover more about myself, find what recharges my batteries, what leaves me feeling blissed out, what ignites my passion. I want my time to be used wisely and at the end, when life fades back in (think movie scene-esque) I want to be serene, refreshed and ready to go.

What do you do to relax and recharge?

It's ALL About Me: More about Me Again

BeckyandJames
Last week's failed attempt at sharing more about myself made me really open my eyes and mind this week. It made me take notice of so much more than I normally would. I find it so easy to just go along and miss details. Thank you to those of you who asked me questions and let me know what else you want to know about me. That got the thought process going, too.

So, here I go again;

*  I want to start by saying I HATE this Wurrawhy - some new kids show that I am watching while I wait for the news

*  For a brief time I was a Digiscrap Designer. I was very into it and so excited that I was something, then during my pregnancy with Jasper my mojo disappeared. And never came back.

*  Unfortunately, the same happened with my digiscrap obsession. Suddenly I could not scrap. At all. I was on three wonderful CTs (creative teams) which I let down majorly. I miss it, yet the desire is still gone. I used to scrap literally everything and I feel guilty that I have stopped recording important things the way I once did.

{Click for credits}

*  I have weird fears. Sausage dogs are terrifying. I have mentioned my fear of cows and emus once or twice and I have realised recently sausage dogs make the list too. At least this time I have a reason for my fear. When I was young there was this grumpy dog which used to chase me. It seems I have been scarred for life!

*  I seem to have an iObsession. I was telling James only yesterday that I needed an iPad2 for while Ellie's at dance class, so I can sit and blog. And, I put out a 'will blog for iPad2' on Twitter as I really want one for James (it would be his like my iPhone is mine)... No takers yet, but the offer is still there...

*  I love baby feet, I just want to kiss them and tickle them and photograph them

*  But, I hate people touching my feet. Or looking at them

*  I have a terrible memory. Really. I have blamed baby brain, though in truth it's always been bad. Baby brain simply made it worse. What's my name again?

*  I once rang my grandmother and started the conversation with "Hi, Nan, it's....ummm..." True story

*  For as long as I can remember I have loved photography. Before I grew up I dreamt of traveling to exotic locations and creating a photo book of my adventures

*  I am lusting after vintage cameras. I so want a collection, this one in particular has me all excited

* I have thought about sharing some of my teenage writing here. I am sure none of you would ever look at me (or read me) the same way again

*  In the past week I was told that one of my grandparents once ridiculed my writing dream, told me I wouldn't be able to do it and to get a real job. I don't remember it. Or didn't, the more I have thought about it since the more I realise it might have had something to do with me giving up on being a published author

Carly asked what I did pre-James... I've been wondering this myself. I feel like I must have done nothing, yet at the same time I think I must have done heaps. Will get back to you on this, since right now it feels like there was no pre-James!

Now that I am sufficiently bored with myself I am going to finish up.

Tell me about you... (you are much more interesting to me!)

It's ALL About Me: More about Me

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here

In my quest to find time for myself I have found myself at a loss of what exactly to do. Yes, I wrote a post about Making the Time with the very first point being 'make a list' of things you could do, but I think I may have been remiss and skipped an important point in helping the creation of said list.
I've been a mother for just over three and a half years and it's so easy to forget the things that make you you and the things you love to do, so today I am going to share a list of things about myself; somewhat like what I have started on my About Me page. A brainstorm about myself, if you will. And since you can never have too much information about me, I decided to share this process with you.

Firstly, though, I want to say - I took my time to get dressed this morning. Oh My Gosh. How awesome is it to not be in a rush because there are little people getting into the pantry, fighting or needing a nappy change?? Bliss.

*****
Soo, I wrote the above this morning before Jasper decided he was going to be a grump for the rest of the day. Right now I am sitting here trying to write this list and I realise.... I have NO idea what to write. Which could be the reason I've come to a standstill in terms of doing things I enjoy or love, things that recharge me.

I am going to leave this as today's post and revisit it soon, with my list. If I can't think of things about me, I will answer the 50 Questions that will free your Mind. That's on my 101 in 1001, anyway.

Until then; is there anything you want to ask about me? If so, shout it out, at least then I'd have something to write.

Want to share a 'brainstorm' about yourself?

It's ALL About Me: Sleep

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here
Do you ever think about how ironic it is that, as a teenager, you can stay up 'til all hours no trouble. Making midnight was never a struggle before children, since children I don't think I have made it into more than one New Year awake. Now that I need the stamina to stay up or get up I have none. Zip.

In the last week or so we've had sickness, sickness and a little more sickness (you know, just to shake things up), add to that a teething Little Man and it's fair to say there's not been a whole lot of sleeping going on. For anyone, really.

It is completely tempting to spend today; my second Day Care day out. Last week was so lovely and I dream of spending it in much the same way, however, I know tiredness is a trigger and grumpiness a warning that I am starting to crumble. I need to rest, recoup and get the energy back to be the kind of mother I should be.

So, today if you need me I will be napping.

Don't forget to do something for YOU today!

It's ALL About Me: Indulgence

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here
When I dropped my girls off at Day Care this morning I was nervous, tentative. Would they like it? Would I cope? Would the other little girl like them? What about the parents; would they like my girls, would they like me? My biggest worry was that one or other girl would cry about me leaving (including me), but neither girl gave me a second thought once they were inside.

The obligatory First Day photo
I made them say goodbye to me and it was kind of like "Yea, bye mum. Now let me go play."

Crushed.

So, Jasper and I went shopping to drown my sorrows. Shopping with one child is ridiculously easy when the child is a baby who doesn't want to touch every toy, piece of sparkly clothing and cute pairs of shoes or eat everything that looks remotely naughty, not to mention the getting in and out of the car takes less than a third of the time. I barely knew what to do with myself when I was out of the car and ready to go in mere minutes.

James mentioned today's 40% off sale at Crossroads last night, so Jazzy and I spent an hour or so leisurely scouring the racks for bargains. There were no children running around the store, hurrying me out the door and so I left with an entire outfit, another top and a cute lip bag - all for just over $60! I was quite thrilled with myself. After a few more purchases, Jasper and I went to have a drink, a chat and a sit together.

I highly recommend the White Tim Tam Chiller from Gloria Jean's - Divine! Unfortunately, my dream of being a weekly visitor will probably swiftly go out the window once James decides I've (possibly) been altogether too indulgent today.

Once we were home, Jasper was in bed and I'd had lunch I decided to get a little Fancy Pants, since I've wanted to join in with Kymmie's linky since first coming across it.

My new outfit - love the orange

A $2 necklace
My second top
$5 headband
If I'd bought some shoes it would have been a complete shop - oh and a bra as, ironically, after spending a morning buying up big I came home and had the only bra that really fits break. I feel amazingly empowered and am secretly waiting for James to ask me out on a date so I can get wear it out.

It's ALL About Me: Fail

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here.
I am SO late to post this today, who knew getting ready to move in a day and a bit with a hubby, three Munchkins and a cat would be so busy?

Let me start by admitting that other than the moments caught on the weekend with James, I haven't managed to get any time to myself. Maybe I should go back, re-read last week's list and try to get myself motivated!

I am currently running my first It's ALL About YOU Giveaway for one of two gorgeous Amelia Rose prints - it ends tomorrow, so be sure to enter now. Also, don't forget that if you link up today you will get an extra entry.

So, now it's your turn; Inspire me!

It's ALL About You: A Giveaway

I am so excited to be bringing you the first giveaway in conjunction with my It's ALL About Me posts and I have to tell you, I love what's up for grabs (I wrote posts, I get to enter, right?) from my first IAAM sponsor; Amelia Rose.

From her website:
Finding beauty in the details, much of my work revolves around close up and macro images. Capturing creative, bold lines and gorgeous colours, images are filled with beauty, happiness, inspiration and sometimes moments of reflection and remembrance.

I chose to approach the creative genius behind Amelia Rose, Carly Webber,  because the images really do bring a smile to my face. Gazing at the images give me great joy. That is how I am choosing who I ask to sponsor; I have to love them and think you will, too.

Enough about me, this is about YOU.

First, let me show you what you could win. I have these 2 gorgeous prints to give away to two lucky readers:
Sunbound
Vision
Both are 5x7” Photographic prints, matted and ready for framing (8x10” Finished size). YOU want these. I want these and I already have a beautiful print generously given to me to light up my day - and it does.

To be in the running all you need to do is make sure you are a follower of my blog, pop over to the Amelia Rose website then come back here and leave a comment on this post telling me which is your favourite print.

For extra entries; join in with my It's ALL About Me linky this week (open now) or next. Those who have joined in the past two weeks have also received extra entries.

Entries close March 5th 2011 (AEST, ie Sydney time) and will be drawn by Random.org. Please note, entry is only open to Australian residents and be sure I have your contact details in case you win!!

If the prize is not claimed within a week, this competition will be redrawn.

You can keep up-to-date with Amelia Rose on Facebook (tell her beckyandjames.com sent you), Made It and Etsy. I, for one, am excited to see what's to come.

It's ALL About Me: Making the Time

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here.
This is now my third week running the It's ALL About Me linky and I have had lots of positive feedback about the idea, yet have only had a total of five link ups. The recurring theme of comments is 'if/when' I get ME time I will join in. Since this past week has been crazy, I thought I would share a couple of ways to find and utilise some time for yourself. I need this list as much as any of you, because while I am adamant that this is a journey I need to be on, it's still one I struggle with.

Making the time for me simply does not come naturally to me.

* Make a List of all the things you could do, things you would like to do, things which make you happy, relaxed, engaged. List the simple, like reading a magazine or drinking a cup of coffee uninterrupted but also add those more extravagant dreams. That way, if time does unexpectedly come up and you're too faint from shock you can look at your list and choose something appropriate that's just for YOU.

Take an Extra 5 Minutes when going about your errands. Pop into your favourite coffee shop and sit down for a cup or take a stroll by the river before you go onto shopping, banking or the post run. That first week, when I took just a few extra minutes before doing the grocery shopping I found it really did make a difference.

* Make dates with friends, with your husband or on your own and keep them. Go out to places you don't go because you have children. Get dressed up. Have a drink.

* Pencil Yourself In when you do your weekly/monthly diary. I have already put myself down for the day my girls start Day Care. Once Jasper's down for his big nap I will be doing something that's just for me. It's something to look forward to, I see it on the calendar and get excited. Plus, having something to look forward to that day is making me a tad less stressed about the fact that they won't be with me for a whole day (what can be done about a Mother with separation anxiety? But, that's another post for another time).

* Take Your Time. I think this is a key point, for ME especially. When you do take those few moments to yourself and you know your precious children (or husband or whoever is waiting for you) are safe and happy don't rush. They will be okay for a few minutes more, in fact they probably won't even notice the added time.

In the past week I combined the second and fifth point to have a 30c ice cream with my mum (yes, I know they cost more now) after dropping the children off with Pa, even though there were three hungry boys at home waiting for lunch. We had a chat, enjoyed our little bit of down time before going to tend to those who needed us and, amazingly, the boys survived that extra five minutes waiting for us. Even with rumbling stomachs (and for the record, there was food on the table for them to make their own, we didn't actually leave them to starve).

Did I miss anything important in my points?
Now, it's your turn. What have you done for yourself recently?

It's ALL About Me: Something New

BeckyandJames
You can find more information about the idea behind this here.
This week there were considerably less opportunities for me to take advantage of, with my poor Little Man starting to teeth and our house now (finally) on the market, most moments have been spent trying to keep the house presentable or have been interrupted by my pained baby (teething is just SO horrible).

However, when my gorgeous Inner-B Mum Organiser arrived in the mail, which I won over at Hear Mum Roar recently, I took the time to sit down and fill out the appointments we have coming up. I also went and wrote up the appointments we have had, just so it would be 'complete'.

I love keeping a written account of appointments and daily happenings and thoughts. It's important to me to have a physical reminder, something I can check daily without having to open the laptop. Plus, it's so relaxing for me to sit and take the time to enter all the details.

Now, it's your turn. What have you done for yourself recently?
Need inspiration? Check out my Top 5 Things on my 'ME Time' To Do List, they're extravagant but they might get you thinking.

At the end of a month, every time you have linked up gets you an extra entry into the giveaway which is focused on YOU. Your happiness. Your time. Want a sneak peek at something I'm giving away this month?

Also, if you clicked through to my list, then you might notice something beautifully fun and bright; not to mention practical that will be part of this month's giveaway (well, not THAT one but another just as beautiful).

The Top 5 on my 'ME Time' To Do List

Today, with my second It's ALL About Me linky ready to go for the morning, I wanted to share the top 5 things on my 'ME Time' to do list. These are the things I long to do more than anything, they are also the things that can't be achieved in the stolen moments, the snatch of 5 minutes here and ten minutes there.

I have these things hopefully written in my Vision File to inspire and encourage me as well as to give me something to look forward to and I wanted to share them with you, maybe you will find some motivation here too.

1. Read, read, read

I remember the long summer days of school holidays, spent laying on the grass and living a multitude of different adventures as I turned the pages of book after book or the cold winter nights snuggled up in bed visiting exotic lands.

These days I am lucky if I get through a page (in fact, I am still on the same page from my 52 week photo) without a child waking up or being interrupted by "Mummy!" If I'm not completely lost in a book then I don't get the full experience that I love and when the book ends I feel a little bit ripped off . That's simply not how I like to read.

2. Swim

I dream of taking myself off to the pool for some laps. Alone. A weekly appointment with myself to do something good for my body and mind. A time to think quietly to myself while exercising.

It would definitely be a change from having to fight over the WiiFit board or lug around three children on a walk and my body does need some looking after - especially since having three babies in three in a half years. It would be easier and better alone.

3. Shop 'til I drop

Suddenly, I love shoes (really, you can find proof here and here). I have an urge, no - a need - to buy sexy high heels, amazing wedges, bright stilettos. And, no I do not know the difference between them, what I do know is that I love the idea of buying shoes.

And obviously, a great pair of shoes calls for a killer outfit and some drop dead gorgeous accessories to complete the ensemble.

4. A Movie and Fancy Dinner

The most logical stop after buying a spectacular outfit is, of course, to glam yourself up, grab your man and go out on the town. Before Ellie we promised to do Date Nights. It never happened. To top it off I've never really gussied up and had a fancy night out and I currently crave a bit of glitter and glam. Not to mention some time alone with my husband.

5. A TV Marathon

A day spent completely vegging out on the couch, wearing my tracksuit and reliving a favourite TV series on a cold winter day sounds deliciously naughty. Some Outrageous Fortune (or Life, Veronica Mars, even some Gossip Girl - of which we have two series that we haven't watched) on the screen, some nibblies, a drink and the time to leisurely paint my nails while I watch.

Does that not sound like bliss?

What would be on the top of your 'ME Time' to do list?

P.S. Don't forget to come back tomorrow to link up!

It's ALL About Me: Stolen Moments

Welcome to the first ever It's ALL About Me link up. I am really excited about the concept and hope I am able to inspire other Mums out there as well as keep myself motivated to do what I need to do for ME. You can find more information about the idea behind this here.
---------------------------------------------------
As this is the first time I have truly focused on getting some time just for me, I went slowly. Put my feelers out, brainstormed and stole some moments out of everyday life to recharge. They were only small things, only five - ten minutes at the most, but they did help.

The first stolen moment came about quite by accident. I left James with the Munchkins and went grocery shopping. I just want to say that I never, ever consider grocery shopping 'me' time - even if I go by myself - I find it too stressful and am unable to wind down.

Once I was done I made my way to the car and saw the flowers I always see and I thought, as I always do, that I would like to take some photos of them. It dawned on me that I was alone and, actually, I could stop for a minute or two and take some.

And so I did.

A few days later, I was reading Louisa's blog about Parenting from your strengths where she linked to a post by Lissa which inspired my next stolen moment. In my stressed shop, I had bought a roast pork without the apple sauce and James DOES NOT do pork without apple sauce. The day I put the pork on, James managed to come home early and I went out to get what he needed.
As I left, I did not mention that I intended to take longer than normal. I did not let on that I wasn't going straight to the shop and then rush back home like I usually do. I wanted James to know he could have all three children without the stress of knowing I was going to take my time.

And just as Lissa said she does, I first went to a local coffee shop, bought myself  a milkshake and sat to drink it. I sat. I thought. I didn't rush. Well, not as much as normal. I did feel guilty (and once James reads this it might be the last time I get away with something like this..) and I kept thinking my phone would ring any minute and I would be busted. It didn't. I sat. I drank. And I liked it.

Then yesterday I stole a third moment (am I getting greedy?) when both girls were in bed and Jasper and I were having a quiet chat. I decided he and I could watch some of my One Little Word class video for February since I hadn't had the opportunity to do so before then. Jasper thought it was pretty funny and we got to watch 15 minutes uninterrupted!

All up I managed to get a whole 30 minutes to myself in a week and I feel good about it. I feel excited that maybe I can do this thing that is important but so hard to get around to. And in a week where my Little Man has started waking more during the night and sleeping less during the day due to teething and my girls have been not well and getting me up at night as well I feel relieved that I took the time. It might just have kept me sane through it all.

Now, it's your turn. What have you done for yourself recently?
